Yewondwossen Assefa is a seasoned information management and GIS software leader with 19 years of experience delivering humanitarian data systems. As Head of the Information Management Unit at UN OCHA since 2021, he shapes data-driven decision making for complex crises, blending software development with program management. He has built and supported diverse IM products—such as humanitarian dashboards, 3W, displacement snapshots, and early warning data—while coordinating cross-agency efforts to strengthen national and regional resilience, notably in Ethiopia and Sierra Leone. His technical breadth spans C/C++, Java, PHP, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, complemented by hands-on platform development for data collection and visualization (ODK/ona, web GIS), and a track record of training hundreds of responders in open-source IM tools. He holds an MBA in Information Systems Management and a B.A.Sc. in Computer Science from Université Laval, underscoring a rare blend of technical depth and organizational leadership. An under-the-radar strength is translating complex humanitarian information needs into practical, auditable solutions that scale across ministries, NGOs, and UN agencies.

Interoperability is increasingly becoming a focus point for organizations that distribute and share data over the Internet. The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) focuses on the development of publicly available geospatial web standards. MapServer supports numerous OGC specifications, allowing users to publish their data services in an interoperable manner. This workshop will review the OGC specfications supported in MapServer as well as provide information on implementation options and issues, as well as what the future holds for OGC support in MapServer
